Laurel and water oaks planted en masse in the seventies and eighties commonly grow two or three codominant stems with included bark at the union: bark grows into the joint instead of wood, so the connection is never strong. At forty-plus years those unions carry enormous weight, and a gust plus a saturated canopy pulls them apart. The half that comes off usually lands on whatever is nearest, which in Brandon's older subdivisions is a roof or a car.
Our first hour on site
Assess and stabilize before anything else. What's still hanging and where will it go if it lets loose. Is the structure sound enough for anyone to be inside. Is there a line involved — if so, TECO clears it before we touch it. Then we cut the load off the building in controlled, rigged sections rather than free-dropping onto damaged structure, tarp the opening, and clear the access so you can get a car out and a roofer in.
Cleanup that's actually finished
Once the emergency is handled we come back in daylight for the rest: sectioning and hauling the trunk, chipping the brush, grinding the stump if you want it gone, and raking and blowing the entire work area including the street and the neighbor's side if we tracked debris there.
