St. Pete's older neighborhoods — Old Northeast, Kenwood, Crescent Lake, Snell Isle — are full of brick streets, 1920s bungalows on 50-foot lots, and enormous live oak and camphor stumps left over from decades of storms. Grinding those cleanly without touching the brick, the sidewalk, or the neighbor's irrigation is a different job than grinding a stump in an open suburban yard, and it's the work we do most here.
In Old Northeast and Kenwood the stump is rarely the hard part — the access is. Fifty-foot lots, brick pavers the city protects, mature hedging, and alleys that are barely wider than a truck. We work these blocks regularly: compact grinder in through the alley or the side gate, plywood over the brick and any concrete we cross, mats under the machine on turf. Nothing gets driven over that shouldn't be.
A mature live oak stump in Snell Isle or Crescent Lake can have a root flare four to six feet across and buttress roots running under the walk. That's not a fifteen-minute grind. We take the stump 6–12 inches below grade and then work outward along the major roots — otherwise you get settling where the roots rot out, and with camphors, aggressive re-sprouting through whatever you plant on top.
Tell us what's going in the spot. Sod or a new bed: we haul the chips and bring clean fill so the grade holds. Nothing planned: we backfill with grindings, tamp it, and it settles naturally over a few months. New tree or hardscape: we go deeper and pull the big roots so nothing decomposes under your investment. Every job ends with a rake-out and a blow-down of the walk and drive.

Grinding an existing stump generally doesn't require a permit. St. Petersburg does protect trees over certain sizes, and removing a living tree usually requires city approval — if the tree is still standing, we'll assess it and explain the city's requirements before we quote the work.
Yes — that's most of our St. Pete work. We use alley access when it's available, board over brick and concrete we have to cross, and run a compact machine that fits standard gates. The city's brick streets are protected and we treat them that way.
We grind out what we can safely reach without undermining the slab. Roots running directly beneath concrete are a judgment call — we'll show you what we're looking at on site and tell you straight whether grinding them risks the slab, rather than surprising you after.
Mature live oak stumps with five- and six-foot root flares are routine for us. If it's genuinely oversized or sitting in a spot the grinder can't reach, we'll say so up front and give you the realistic option, which is sometimes excavation rather than grinding.
